The article discusses the history of education, “the Brotherhood of St. Gury” Mari region in the second half of XIX – early XX centuries., Revealed the dependence of the main directions of its practices from national and educational policy of the Russian state. Also attempted to theoretical understanding of the contribution of fraternity to educate the Mari people during this period.
