The article considers the questions connected with the evolution of the Indonesian state under the governance of Suharto – the second president of the country in the second half of the 1970s. The attention is paid to the social, economic and political aspects of internal and external politics of Indonesia in the framework of the “new order” regime. It was in the 1970s when the public and political tension in the country, instability caused by the political revolt which failed in 1965 and following after that the destruction of the Indonesian Communist Party were overcome. The new ideology put forward by President Suharto, irrespective of its authoritarianism, was accepted by many layers of Indonesian society as a necessary alternative to communism. Though the “new order” seemed successful there were hid-den aspects that could dramatically destabilize the situation in the Republic of Indonesia.
