The article considers peculiar features of abbreviations’ appearance and development during the last century both in Russia and abroad in retrospection. At the present time, when it is possible to review a number of stages of abbreviations’ formation under different extra- and intralinguistic conditions linguistic, communicative and stylistic aspects of the phenomenon are studied. The term “local abbreviation” has been introduced.
