The article considers verbal portraits in the structure of the text of Mari novels. The following methods of creating verbal portraits are analysed here: 1) report; 2) description; 3) valuation; 4) comparison. Valuation keeps pragmatic purpose of exert influence upon the reader to create the definite impression and opinion about the characters of the novels.
