A complicated dynamic picture of the etymological-typological Old Turkic theonym *vadaš, ancient Bulgar *butyš and the Common Slavonic *ubogъ is considred in the article. Their genetic connection with the Indo-European *uā- and *uāt- radicals is proved and the complicated etymological and semantic peripetiae of the old *ubogъ as a part of the Russian idiom ‘На тебе, боже, что мне (нам) не гоже’ are investigated in the article.
