The article deals with the «sea» component in 170 English phraseological units on the basis of the comparative analysis with special attention to the meaning of the central semantic component of the units, their distribution according to semantic fields and groups, their idiographic classification, which reflect emotional and physical state, appearance, intellectual abilities, social position, traits of character, different aspects of human activity as well as the universal concepts of time, space, measure, quality and quantity.
